How much does it cost to transfer shares between brokers?
IG charges $0 for broker-to-broker share transfers to us. However, your current broker may charge exit or stock transfer fees (check with them directly). Registry transfers are usually free when moving shares from issuer-sponsored holdings to IG.
How long does it take to transfer shares from one broker to another?
Share transfer timeframes when moving to IG vary by broker type:
Australian broker-to-broker transfers: Usually up to 2 weeks once transfer documents are received
International broker transfers to IG: Usually up to 6 weeks for US, UK and other international shares
Registry to broker transfers: Usually 4-6 weeks for issuer-sponsored holdings
Tip: Submit your TFN (Australian shares) or tax forms (US shares) early to avoid stock transfer delays.
Do I need to sell my shares before switching brokers to IG?
No, you don't need to sell your shares when transferring between brokers. Our broker-to-broker transfer service moves your existing stock holdings directly to IG without selling them.
What happens to my shares during the transfer process?
During the share transfer period to IG:
You may be unable to trade the stocks being moved between brokers
IG cannot be held responsible for price changes or delays caused by your current broker
Your transferred shares will appear under 'open positions' in your IG dashboard once the broker-to-broker transfer completes
We'll update you via email throughout the stock transfer process
