Friday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed down 353 points at 14,758,  the NASDAQ finished 78 points weaker at 3364 and the S&P 500 closed 40 points lower at 1588.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently 26 higher points at 6185.

FX and commoditiesGBP/USD is down 23 pips at $1.5486, EUR/USD is down one pip at $1.3220 and USD/JPY is up 70 pips at Y98.01. Oil - Brent Crude is up 72 cents at $104.47 and gold is $12 stronger at $1297.

Stocks: BHP Billiton has sold off 15% of its Jimblebar mine iron ore project to a Japanese firm for $1.5 billion.

The day ahead: In Europe, UK public sector net borrowing is out at 9.30am (London time). We are not expecting any major economic announcements from Europe or the US.
