Friday morning snapshot

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed up 92 points at 16,133, the NASDAQ finished up 29 points at 4267 and the S&P 500 ended the day up 11 points at 1839.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently up 44 points at 6856.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is up 29 pips at $1.6680, EUR/USD is down 11 pips at $1.3708 and USD/JPY is up 13 pips at ¥102.42. Brent crude is down five cents at $110.26 and gold is trading at $1322, down $0.5

Stocks: Royal Dutch Shell has agreed to sell a part of its Australian business for $2.6 billion to Dutch-owned energy and commodity-trading company, Vitol Group. Rolls-Royce has won a contract with the US Air Force worth $182.7 million, for sustainment services to its C-130J fleet.

The day ahead: UK retail sales and public sector net borrowing figures will be released at 9.30am. In the US, existing home sales figures are expected at 3pm.
