Tuesday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed down 136 points at 14,936, the NASDAQ finished 37 points weaker at 3770 and the S&P 500 ended the day 14 points lower at 1676.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is down seven points at 6430.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is down 22 pips at $1.6076, EUR/USD is down 11 pips at $1.3570 and USD/JPY is up 42 pips at ¥97.14. Brent crude is up 22 cents at $103.33 and gold  is trading at $1326, up $3.

Stocks:Direct Line has sold its life insurance business for £62 million.

The day ahead: German factory orders are released at 11am. In the US, the NFIB small business index is due at 12.30pm, followed by the IBD economic optimism at 3pm.
