Transparent costs

IG Smart Portfolios offer you an affordable and innovative way to invest. All the costs involved in our low fee structure are fully transparent, and our commitment to clarity on charges means you’ll know the total cost of ownership (TCO) before you invest.

We offer this information upfront because we understand the difficulty in comparing costs between providers. Some simply offer a different type of service, while others don’t allow you to view your total costs unless you become a customer.

You can see a complete breakdown of costs for an IG Smart Portfolio in the table below. Discover how our total annual cost, on a £40,000 investment, compares with providers offering a similar type of discretionary investment management service.

IG Smart Portfolio 0.50% 0.14% 0.07% 0.71% £284

This table contains latest available data from the websites of each provider. Data accurate as of 16 June 2020.

Your IG Smart Portfolio will be managed free of charge if it exceeds £50,000, effectively capping your management fee at £250 a year. This means that as your investments grow, the average cost for your portfolio falls.

What do our low fees mean for you?

Higher operational costs mean that any portfolio built using active funds is likely to cost more than one using index funds. These added fees are only worthwhile to you if they come with better performance. However, what if your active fund manager falls short of their promises?

Paying these higher fees can add up considerably over time. The graph below shows the growth of a £20,000 investment in both an IG Smart Portfolio and a leading wealth provider whose ready-made portfolios are built using active funds with an estimated total annual cost of 1.8% a year.

If both portfolios grew at 6% annually – before fees – for 30 years, your investment with a leading wealth manager could be worth £388,962. If you had invested in an IG Smart Portfolio, your investment might instead be £536,443 – that’s £147,481 more.

With these additional savings you could cover your children’s university fees, pay for numerous family holidays or put down a deposit on a second home. It could even be the difference between retiring on time and retiring early.

Our low fees are just one of many reasons to invest with us. Visit the IG Smart Portfolios page to find out more about the benefits of our service.

Compare performance

IG Smart Portfolios are built using asset-allocation models from BlackRock, and are tailored to suit five distinct risk profiles.

Four of our five risk profiles have proven track records, based on the historical performance of established BlackRock models.

The risk-seeking ‘aggressive’ model was created by BlackRock exclusively for IG, so does not have a long enough track record to be considered.

In each case, the BlackRock models have consistently out-performed industry-accepted benchmarks since their inception in 2014.

2 Fund costs can vary over time as they are dependent on the funds used to construct the portfolio and the relative performance of each fund held within the portfolio.

3 Transaction costs occur when funds are bought and sold to rebalance your portfolio. Estimates for other providers are taken at the date stated. Our annual estimate for IG Smart Portfolios is based on 100% portfolio turnover, which is rather higher than seen since our launch in February 2017.
