The Dow was boosted after three of its thirty component stocks reported earnings that beat estimates. The blue chip index had advanced 0.26% to 15,585 with less than an hour remaining until the close in New York.

DuPont, United Technologies and Travelers all exceeded expectations with their latest earnings, although the share price of Travelers fell.

The S&P 500 and the NASDAQ 100 were effectively flat after spending most of the day jumping in and out of negative territory. The technology sector has been very lacklustre so far this earnings season, with high profile earnings and revenue misses from Microsoft and Google.

Last night Netflix beat earnings estimates, but disappointed the market with the number of new subscribers to its service for the quarter. Shares in Netflix were down by more than 4% late in the New York trading session.

The most high profile tech stock of all reports after the close tonight: Apple will be revealing its fiscal third-quarter numbers after the bell, which will be fervently followed by investors. Other big names reporting include AT&T (another Dow component) and Broadcom.
