Bitcoin (BTC) broke above $69,000 on 20 August 2026 for the first time since June, extending a rally that began in Wednesday's after-hours session. The move was driven by a US Treasury announcement to substantially increase long-dated bond buybacks, and was amplified by a wave of forced buying as leveraged short positions were liquidated. Ethereum (ETH) moved even further, rising by a reported 9–18% depending on the source and time window.
Bitcoin opened around $64,700 on Wednesday 19 August 2026 and rallied through the session and into Thursday, briefly touching close to $70,000 before easing slightly. By Thursday morning, most outlets — including CoinDesk, Proactive Investors and KuCoin — placed Bitcoin trading just above $69,000. Coverage of the exact percentage gain varies: KuCoin and CaptainAltcoin cite a daily move in the region of 5.7–6.2%, while CoinGabbar's CoinGecko-sourced figures put the 24-hour gain at around 8.1%. That range likely reflects different starting points and time windows rather than a genuine discrepancy in the underlying move, but it's flagged here rather than resolved to a single figure.
The primary catalyst, according to KuCoin, CoinDesk and TradingKey, was a US Treasury announcement that it would at least double the size of its long-dated bond buyback operations — from $2bn to at least $4bn per operation — starting 9 September 2026. A bond buyback is when a government repurchases some of its own previously issued debt, which tends to reduce the available supply of those bonds and can push their yields down.
Lower long-term bond yields reduce the appeal of holding low-risk government debt relative to other assets, which can push investors toward higher-risk, higher-potential-return assets — including equities and cryptoassets like Bitcoin. CoinDesk reported that a Bloomberg index of Treasuries maturing in 20 years or more jumped 1.7% on Wednesday, its biggest single-day gain since February 2025, alongside similar moves in Japanese, Australian and New Zealand government bonds.

The rally was amplified by a short squeeze — a scenario where traders who had bet on falling prices (short positions) are forced to buy back the asset to close their positions as prices rise against them, which itself pushes prices higher still. CoinDesk and Proactive Investors both reported more than $1bn in leveraged short positions liquidated within 24 hours, with CaptainAltcoin citing a higher figure of roughly $1.9bn in total liquidated positions including $1.74bn in shorts specifically. As with the price-gain figures, these numbers vary by data provider and the exact window measured.
Ethereum (ETH) rose sharply alongside Bitcoin — Proactive Investors reported an approximately 18% surge in Asian trading, while CoinDesk described a roughly 18% climb in a day from a level ETH had not cleared in weeks. Other large-cap tokens including Solana and XRP also posted double-digit percentage gains over the same period, according to Proactive Investors. CoinDesk's own reporting flagged that a move this fast, driven by a macro liquidity headline rather than anything specific to Ethereum, has historically tended to partially reverse — a pattern worth noting rather than a prediction of what happens next.
Separately, Proactive Investors reported that President Donald Trump used a White House event with executives from Coinbase, Gemini, Ripple and Chainlink Labs to urge US Congress to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act — a market structure bill that has been under discussion in the Senate. This is a regulatory development in the US market and does not change the UK regulatory position on cryptoassets, which remains largely unregulated for retail consumer protection purposes.

UK residents can gain exposure to cryptocurrency price movements in different ways, including direct ownership of a cryptoasset or trading price movements without owning the underlying asset. None of these routes removes the underlying volatility or regulatory risk of the asset class itself.
For traders considering position sizing after a sharp move like this, IG's risk management tools, including stop-loss orders, are available — though as with any leveraged position, execution during fast-moving markets can occur at a worse level than intended.
Those newer to crypto markets can practice first using a demo account, and manage live positions through IG's trading platform once ready. IG's crypto internal link coverage is currently limited to a single hub page — this has been flagged to the editorial team as a standing site-structure gap.
Why is Bitcoin price rising today?
Bitcoin's move above $69,000 on 20 August 2026 followed a US Treasury announcement to increase long-dated bond buybacks, which weighed on bond yields and boosted demand for risk assets, combined with a short squeeze that forced further buying as leveraged short positions were liquidated.
What is a short squeeze in crypto?
A short squeeze happens when traders who had bet on a price fall (short positions) are forced to buy the asset back as the price rises against them, which can accelerate the upward move. More than $1bn in short positions were liquidated during this rally, according to CoinDesk and Proactive Investors.
Is now a good time to buy Bitcoin?
We can't tell you that — it depends on your own circumstances, risk tolerance and objectives, and cryptoassets remain highly volatile with no consumer protection in the UK. This article describes what happened and why; it isn't personalised investment or trading advice.
What is the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act?
It's a proposed US market structure bill intended to create clearer regulatory rules for the crypto industry, which President Trump urged Congress to advance during a White House event on 19 August 2026. It applies to the US regulatory framework and does not alter UK rules on cryptoassets.
