CES 2019: Uber to launch a flying taxi by 2023

Uber and Bell debut their revolutionary ‘flying-car’ technology, unveiling the Bell Nexus at CES 2019

CES 2019 has showcased some of the most innovative technology to come out the auto industry, with one of the most spectacular concepts being unveiled for the first time – The Bell Nexus.

The Bell Nexus is essentially a giant, black, shiny five-person flying car that can be used to transport a small group of people.

Unlike anything we've seen before, the hybrid craft was unveiled to the CES crowd by Uber and Bell at the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas on Wednesday, leaving on-lookers in awe.

Uber-Air only a few years away

Uber propositions its solution to the traffic glut with its ‘flying taxi’ air service using crafts like the Bell Nexus to begin its Uber-Air vertical.

The Uber-Air service could be available in just a few years, with the company looking to launch as early as 2023.

The Bell Nexus, designed much like a giant drone, can seat five people, and fly for 150 miles on a single charge.

While there are still a few kinks to figure out before the craft is ready for take-off, CEO of Bell, Mitch Snyder said, Nexus could be one of the first crafts to give Uber its wings.

‘As space at the ground level becomes limited, we must solve transportation challenges in the vertical dimension — and that's where Bell's on-demand mobility vision takes hold,' Mr Snyder said in a statement.

Revolutionising the auto industry

An evident theme at CES this year is 'smart cities' set to change the way we do every-day things. It’s clear the auto industry is in the process of a big change, with the world’s major cities becoming increasingly congested.

While Uber and Bell showed flying cars could be a solution to ease congestion, other automotive companies had their own ideas. Kia showcased their vision for autonomous cars, displaying a new vehicle that drives itself, designed similar to a hotel room.

Other automakers also shined on the show floor, with new initiatives coming out of big car manufacturers like Nissan, Toyota and several start-ups doing their bit to advance the automotive industry.
