Crypto perpetual futures are a type of derivative contract that tracks the price of an underlying asset — such as bitcoin or ether — without ever expiring. Unlike standard futures, which settle on a predetermined date, perpetuals can be held indefinitely, provided the trader maintains sufficient margin.
Perpetuals were pioneered by BitMEX in May 2016 and have since become the primary instrument on most major crypto derivatives platforms. They are always cash-settled: when a position is closed, only the profit or loss (PnL) is exchanged, not the underlying asset.
Perpetual futures now account for over 90% of all crypto derivatives trading volume, with daily volume exceeding $80bn, according to CryptoQuant and CoinWallet data.
The key structural difference is the absence of an expiry date. Traditional futures converge to spot at settlement; perpetuals use a funding rate mechanism to achieve the same effect continuously.

Leverage in perpetuals allows you to control a position larger than the capital you post as margin. For example, 10x leverage means a £1,000 margin deposit controls a £10,000 position.
While leverage amplifies potential gains, it equally amplifies losses. A 10% adverse move on a 10x leveraged position would eliminate the entire margin posted. Professional traders typically use conservative leverage ratios — often 3x to 5x — to provide a meaningful buffer against volatility.
Initial margin is the collateral required to open a position. Maintenance margin is the minimum equity required to keep it open. If losses reduce your account equity below the maintenance margin threshold, the exchange will liquidate the position automatically.
Most platforms use two margin modes: isolated margin (where only the margin allocated to a single position is at risk) and cross margin (where available account balance is used to prevent liquidation across all positions).
Open interest (OI) is the total value of all outstanding perpetual positions that have not been settled or closed. Rising open interest alongside rising prices can indicate growing conviction; declining OI alongside falling prices may signal position unwinding. OI is widely tracked as a market sentiment indicator alongside funding rates.
The mark price is a fair-value reference price calculated from spot index prices — typically a weighted average across major exchanges. It is used to calculate unrealised PnL and, critically, to determine liquidation. Using mark price rather than the last traded price protects against price manipulation triggering unnecessary liquidations during brief, illiquid spikes.
