Ether breaks higher as ETF flows return and $3,000 comes into view

Ether has surged to levels last traded in January, breaking above its recent trading range as renewed ETF demand and improving momentum propel the cryptocurrency higher.

ETH climbed to $2,805.98 on 21 September, extending a rally that has lifted it by around 10% over the past week and taken it back to levels last seen in January. The move follows a period of consolidation after Ether rallied by more than 30% in late August.

The latest advance has brought the $3,000 region firmly back into focus. A sustained move above the recent high at $2,805.98 could allow Ether to challenge $3,000, while a decisive break through that psychological threshold would potentially open the way towards the $3,400-$3,450 region, where the January and December highs are located.

The improvement in price has also been accompanied by a renewed acceleration in US spot Ether ETF flows, although the flow picture remains volatile.

Ether returns to January levels

Ether's recovery has been one of the more significant developments in the cryptocurrency market in recent weeks.

After suffering a sharp decline earlier in the year, ETH began building a base before accelerating higher in late August. The rally subsequently entered a consolidation phase, with the cryptocurrency trading sideways as investors digested its gains.

That consolidation has now ended, completing a bullish flag formation and signalling another up leg. A technical target from the pattern comes in around $3,050.

The significance of the move is that ETH has not simply recovered to a previous resistance level - it has broken through one of the barriers that had contained the market since the summer.

ETF demand accelerates

The latest rally has coincided with a renewed improvement in US spot Ether ETF demand.

On 21 September, US spot Ether ETFs attracted approximately $270 million of net inflows, according to ETF flow data. BlackRock's ETHA led the buying with around $110.1 million, while Fidelity's FETH attracted approximately $73 million.

The inflows continued on 22 September, when spot Ether ETFs recorded another $162.31 million of net inflows. BlackRock's ETHA again led the market with $88.13 million, followed by Fidelity's FETH with $33.64 million.

That means the two latest trading sessions generated more than $430 million of combined net inflows.

The timing is significant. Ether's move above $2,600 and then $2,700 has occurred alongside a sharp increase in ETF demand, providing evidence that regulated investment vehicles are participating in the latest recovery.

It also reverses some of the weakness seen earlier in September.

September ETF flows have been volatile

Despite the latest surge, Ether's ETF flow picture has not been uniformly positive throughout September.

US spot Ether ETFs recorded net outflows of approximately $224.1 million on 16 September, followed by another $141.5 million of outflows on 15 September. However, flows quickly turned positive, with $216.4 million of inflows on 11 September, $121 million on 14 September and $143.8 million on 18 September.

The four-session sequence from 18 to 22 September was particularly strong, with inflows of approximately:

$143.8 million on 18 September

$270 million on 21 September

$162.3 million on 22 September

That represents more than $576 million of net inflows across those three reported sessions.

The recent acceleration is important because ETF flows have become an increasingly significant source of demand for Ether.

The funds now hold around 5.91 million ETH, worth approximately $23.7 billion, equivalent to around 4.8% of Ethereum's circulating supply, according to ETF tracking data.

ETF demand could help sustain the breakout

The combination of rising price and improving ETF flows creates a more constructive backdrop for Ether.

The cryptocurrency's late-August rally demonstrated that ETH can rise rapidly once momentum builds. However, the subsequent consolidation showed that investors were not yet willing to chase the market indefinitely.

The latest ETF inflows suggest that some of that hesitation may now be fading.

Importantly, the ETF flows do not necessarily mean that every dollar of inflow represents immediate spot purchases of Ether. Nevertheless, sustained net creations in spot products increase the amount of capital allocated to regulated ETH investment vehicles and can provide an important source of underlying demand.

The contrast with mid-September is particularly notable.

Ether experienced sizeable ETF outflows around the Federal Reserve's September meeting, yet flows have turned sharply positive since then. The return of more than $400 million of inflows over 21-22 September has coincided with ETH breaking above the key $2,662.15 resistance level, the 11 September high.

If this relationship continues, ETF demand could help support Ether as it approaches $3,000.

$3,000 is the next major test

The immediate technical target is now the psychological $3,000 region.

IG's technical analysis puts the initial target from Ether's bullish flag formation at around $3,050, implying that the $3,000 area is not simply a psychological level but also sits close to the projected target from the recent consolidation pattern.

Ether may encounter some resistance between $2,775 and $2,879, an area that corresponds with previous daily highs and lows. A sustained break through that region would strengthen the case for a move towards $3,000-to-$3,050.

Beyond $3,050, the next major technical area is considerably higher.

The August and October 2025 lows, December 2025 and January 2026 highs at $3,356.65-to-$3,447.14 represent a medium-term bullish upside target zone.

That would represent a significant further advance from current levels, but the first challenge is clearly the psychological $3,000 mark.

Ether's bullish scenario

The bullish scenario is for Ether to maintain its breakout above the late August and early September highs and 20 September low at $2,565.17-to-$2,530.90.

While this support area underpins, a rise above the current September high at $2,805.98 remains at hand. If bettered, the $3,000-to-$3,050 region should be in focus.

Continued positive ETF flows would strengthen this scenario, particularly if BlackRock's ETHA and Fidelity's FETH continue to attract significant inflows.

A sustained break above $3,050 could then bring the $3,356.65-to-$3,447.14 area into focus, although this would require another significant extension of the current rally.

Ether's bearish scenario

The main risk is that the latest breakout fails.

Ether has risen sharply over a relatively short period, meaning some investors may have chosen to lock in profits as the cryptocurrency approached $2,800.

A fall back below $2,565.17-to-$2,530.90 support zone would weaken the recent breakout and may lead to the more significant $2,464.83-to-$2,355.48 support area being revisited. It consists of the March and April highs and late August-to-current September lows.

ETF flows would also be important in this scenario. A return to persistent outflows at the same time as ETH falls back below its breakout level would suggest that the latest advance is losing underlying support.
