How to buy, sell and short IAG shares

IAG was formed through the merger of British Airways and Iberia, and it has grown to become one of the largest airlines in the world in terms of revenue. Discover how to buy, sell and short IAG shares.

How to buy or invest in IAG shares

Investing in IAG (ICAG) is different to buying IAG shares. When we talk about investing, we mean taking direct ownership of the shares, making you a shareholder with voting rights in the company. You’ll pay the full value of the shares upfront, and you could receive dividends from the company if it pays them.

When we talk about buying IAG shares, we mean trading on the IAG share price with financial derivatives like spread bets and CFDs. These enable you to trade with leverage, giving you full market exposure while committing a deposit – known as margin.

How to sell and short IAG shares

After investing directly in IAG shares, you may eventually want to exit your investment position – either to take a profit or to cut a loss. To do this, you’d need to sell your IAG shares. Selling your IAG shares means that you’ll no longer have a stake in the company, and you’ll no longer be considered a ‘shareholder’.

Alternatively, if you are a trader who has a negative outlook on the IAG share price, you can short IAG shares with spread bets and CFDs. A short position will be profitable if the IAG share price falls, and you’ll be trading with leverage when you short IAG shares with us.
