Ebay sues Amazon over ‘poached sellers’ campaign

Ebay has filed a lawsuit against online retailer Amazon over an ‘orchestrated’ campaign to steal sellers from its site.

Online marketplace eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) has filed a lawsuit with US courts against online retailer Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), accusing its rival of using its internal messaging system to lure sellers away from its platform.

According to the filing, Amazon employees allegedly created eBay user accounts and sent sellers on the site messages with the aim to entice to sell their products on Amazon, which eBay claims is a breach of its user agreement.

'Unscrupulous conduct' by Amazon

Ebay labelled its rival's actions an ‘orchestrated, coordinated, worldwide campaign’ to ‘illegally lure eBay sellers to sell on Amazon’.

Amazon has begun an investigation over the allegations made against it.

Ebay was made aware of the issue after one of its sellers contacted the company after receiving messages from an Amazon employee attempting to recruit sellers.

‘We have uncovered an unlawful and troubling scheme on the part of Amazon to solicit eBay sellers to move to Amazon’s platform,’ eBay said in a statement.

‘We have demanded that Amazon end its unlawful activity and we will take the appropriate steps, as needed, to protect eBay.’
