Monday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Friday night in the US: The Dow Jones closed up  32 at 16,583, the NASDAQ finished up 15 points at 3555 and the S&P 500 ended the day up three points at 1878.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently up nine points at 6823.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is up 26 pips at $1.6875, EUR/USD is up 13 pips at $1.3772 and USD/JPY is up two pips at ¥101.89. Brent crude is up 43 cents at $108.36 and gold is trading at $1290, up $1.

Stocks: Lonmin has posted a 63% drop in its six-month earnings. Capita has secured £1.1 billion worth of contracts since the start of the year and is on track to hit its full-year targets.

The day ahead: In the US, Federal Reserve member Charles Plosser is speaking at 5pm, followed by the federal budget balance at 7pm.
