US President, Donald Trump, will give his long-delayed State of the Union speech. It was delayed because of impasse with US Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, during the government shutdown. Now that there is a temporary end to the gridlock, Trump will address both houses of Congress to address national issues.

What will Trump talk about in the State of the Union?

Undoubtedly, Trump will talk about his defining issue as president, building a border wall on the US-Mexico border. He will reportedly discuss a bipartisan plan to immigration reform in his address, titled ‘Choosing Greatness.’ White House spokesperson, Kellyanne Conway, said that Trump still wants to work with Democrats in Congress who oppose the wall.

‘He wants Congress to finish its work. He wants them to put a deal on his desk that he can sign,’ said Conway.

Though there is controversy about Trump’s immigration policies, he can tout a strong economy, corporate tax cuts, and criminal justice reform as successes in his State of the Union. Democrats have to act carefully to craft an opposing message that will reach voters that are watching the speech.

How will Democrats counter the State of the Union?

Democrats have chosen former gubernatorial candidate, Stacey Abrams, to deliver the response to Trump’s speech. Abrams was chosen because she’s a popular politician who advocated for undocumented immigrants and working-class voters in her native US state of Georgia. As an African-American woman, Abrams hopes to be the face of a diverse and inclusive Democratic Party that will pledge to work for tax breaks for middle-class Americans.

‘It's crucial for the Democratic Party at this point to decide what sorts of voices they want to represent and what sorts of inroads they want to make as far as the party being optimally inclusive,’ said Cornell University professor, Jamila Michener.

Many Republican and Democratic Americans will be watching the State of the Union to see if Trump will try to bring a divided nation together.
