Week Ahead 30/10/23: US, UK and Japan rates; Apple earnings

With earnings winding down, there are relatively few US all-sessions stocks still to watch. However the big one - Apple - reports on Thursday and will be worth picking up on. Jeremy Naylor has this preview of the coming week.

Don’t forget the ‘winter time’ switch

The video starts by talking about the time difference that traders in Europe and the UK need to adjust to because of the switch to Greenwich Mean Time. Examples of important events like the non-farm payrolls and the Federal Reserve (Fed) interest rate decision that will have different timings due to this change.

Jeremy then provides a preview of the economic events happening throughout the week. On Monday, there will be news about Australian retail sales and German consumer prices. On Tuesday, we can expect the Bank of Japan (BoJ) interest-rate decision, unemployment rate data, and other information. Also due is important data from France, Germany and the Euro Zone, as well as the US consumer confidence number.

On Wednesday, we can look forward to hearing about the Fed interest-rate decision, private payrolls number, ISM manufacturing data and EIA crude oil inventories. Thursday brings the Bank of England (BoE) interest-rate decision, German unemployment data and US weekly jobless claims. Friday brings us Chinese and Euro Zone data, with the highlight being the US non-farm payrolls report.

Navigating volatility and risk

Jeremy also discusses volatility and risk, noting that volatility has increased, meaning that the expected market moves are changing. He emphasises how a higher risk-free return rate can affect trading decisions and the importance of adjusting our expectations accordingly.

Lastly, the video mentions some notable corporate events happening during the week. This includes earnings reports from companies like Apple, HSBC, Glencore, BP, Shell, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Stellantis, Airbnb, Pfizer, AMD, Next and GSK. These events will be watched closely by traders and investors.
