Apple bolsters 3D animation capabilities with iKinema acquisition
The tech giant has a clear interest in 3D animation with its latest acquisition, with the company rumoured to makes its foray into augmented reality next year.
Apple has acquired UK-based iKinema, a company that specialises in full-body motion-capture software used in video games and movies.
The tech giant’s latest purchase adds weight to rumours that the company is eager to enter the augmented reality (AR) space, with Apple allegedly looking to release its own AR headset next year.
Apple’s shares have climbed more than 2% on Friday to $226 as of 17:15 GMT.
Apple remains tight-lipped about iKinema acquisition
This isn’t the only acquisition Apple has made in the AR space, with the tech company buying several smaller companies with the aim of bolstering its ARKit platform, with it buying Metaio, Flyby Media and Faceshift to name a few.
However, the company refused to explain the rationale behind its latest acquisition.
‘Apple buys smaller companies from time to time, and we generally don’t discuss our purpose or plans,’ the company said in a statement.
