Mueller report finds no evidence of Trump collusion with Russia
Special counsel, Robert Mueller’s report has found no evidence to charge US president Donald Trump with obstruction of Justice, after a two-year investigation into a Russia collusion with the Trump campaign
Mueller's report found no evidence of collusion between Trump’s campaign team and Russia, US attorney general William Barr said on Sunday.
Trump hailed the announcement as a “complete and total exoneration.” According to a summary of Mueller’s findings, the investigation found that no one in Trump’s campaign had conspired with the Russian government to help defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.
Mueller, however, had not reached a conclusion on whether Trump broke the law when he interfered with the various probes into the 2016 election. Mueller presented his evidence to Barr to make the final decision.
The Democrats have accused Trump of obstructing the Russia probe when he fired former FBI director James Comey in 2017.
Trump not exonerated
Barr, and deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein decided that the evidence did not justify bringing obstruction charges, according to the Justice Department.
‘While this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.' Mueller said.
It is unclear how much of Mueller’s full report has been made available to the public.
US house of representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and senate democratic leader Chuck Schumer said that Trump not being exonerated ‘demonstrates how urgent it is that the full report and underlying documentation be made public without any further delay.’
‘It's a shame that our country had to go through this,’ Trump told reporters ‘This was an illegal takedown that failed. And hopefully, somebody's going to be looking at the other side.’ Trump said.
Further investigations
While Barr's summary said Mueller found no evidence that the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia, other investigations are underway.
Investigations are focusing on Trump’s business and financial dealings as well as personal conduct. Committees of the Democratic-controlled house are also preparing inquiries.
