This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently up four points at 6743.
FX and commodities: GBP/USD is flat at $1.6482, EUR/USD is up eight pips at $1.3678 and USD/JPY is down 77 pips at ¥103.39. Brent crude is down nine cents at $107.14 and gold is trading at $1248, down $1.
Stocks: The M&A market might be off to an early start, as engineering and consultancy firm Amec has launched a cash and share bid for rival firm Foster Wheeler. Royal Mail has a boardroom change, with Sue Whalley taking over as the new COO. Sports Direct has acquired a 4.63% holding in Debenhams and stated a desire to look for cross-company synergies in the operational departments. Greene King has benefited from a 5% jump in like-for-like sales during the festive period, and this has helped increase sales by 3.8% over the year.
The day ahead: This afternoon will see the US post its monthly Federal Reserve budget balance. Otherwise it is very quiet on the economic calendar.
