Friday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed up 108 points at 16,331, the NASDAQ finished up 11 points at 4319 and the S&P 500 ended the day up 11 points at 1872.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently up 13 points at 6554.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is down 30 pips at $1.6479, EUR/USD is down seven pips at $1.3774 and USD/JPY is down 28 pips at ¥102.12. Brent crude is up 12 cents at $106.53 and gold is trading at $1335, up $7.

Stocks: British Gas has announced it will cut 300 jobs in the UK and make significant reductions to its 1000 employees in Australia. Construction company Balfour Beatty has been awarded a £240 million contract for expansion work to the Dubai Mall.

The day ahead: UK public sector net borrowing is due out at 9.30am. Later in the day the eurozone consumer confidence index is expected at 3pm.
