Friday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed up ten points at 16,543, the NASDAQ finished up 15 points at 3650 and the S&P 500 ended the day up four points at 1892.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently down 14 points at 6805.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is down four pips at $1.6868, EUR/USD is down seven pips at $1.3649 and USD/JPY is down six pips at ¥101.68. Brent crude is up seven cents at $110.42 and gold is trading at $1295, up $1.

Stocks: Saga’s IPO opened at 185p, giving the company a market capitalisation of £2.1 billion. Balfour Beatty has won a £78 million US rail contract. The company will build tracks and system components for North Carolina’s Charlotte transit system.

The day ahead: Today will see the release of the German IFO business climate and Italian retail sales at 9am. Later in the day, US new home sales are expected at 3pm.
