Amazon reportedly wants to cancel New York HQ2 deal

Reports claim that Amazon may choose an alternative to New York for its new headquarters.

Amazon is reportedly changing its mind about having New York for its HQ2 location. The online retailing giant may back out of a plan to have one of its new headquarters there just months after choosing the city.

Why would Amazon HQ2 leave New York?

Amazon’s chief executive officer (CEO), Jeff Bezos, chose New York, Nashville, Tennessee, and Arlington, Virginia as their next main locations. While Nashville and Arlington have welcomed the e-commerce company, many New Yorkers have been critical of the deal.

A source close to the company said that Amazon may change its mind about picking New York.

‘The question is whether it's worth it if the politicians in New York don't want the project, especially with how people in Virginia and Nashville have been so welcoming,’ said the source.

Many New Yorkers have been critical of the Amazon HQ2 deal because of concerns about workers coming in from other cities. Even though the corporation said that it will hire local residents, New York Congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, expressed fear that if New Yorkers are hired, they will receive low wages and endure grueling work conditions. Ocasio-Cortez cheered the news about Amazon possibly pulling out of New York on Twitter.

‘Can everyday people come together and effectively organize against creeping overreach of one of the world’s biggest corporations? Yes, they can,’ tweeted Ocasio-Cortez.

Amazon disputes the claims that they will push out local businesses and residents.

‘We're focused on engaging with our new neighbors — small business owners, educators, and community leaders. Whether it's building a pipeline of local jobs through workforce training or funding computer science classes for thousands of New York City students, we are working hard to demonstrate what kind of neighbor we will be,’ said an Amazon spokesperson.

What will happen next for Amazon HQ2?

New York governor, Andrew Cuomo, blamed New York state senators for opposing the HQ2 deal and says the company will bring in thousands of jobs.

‘If they stop Amazon from coming to New York, they're going to have the people of New York state to explain it to. It is irresponsible to allow political opposition to overcome sound government policy,’ said Cuomo.

Though Amazon hasn’t made any official statement about the New York HQ2, many people in New York and around the US will be watching Amazon’s next move.
