Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed down 117 points at 16,906, the NASDAQ finished down 46 points at 3865 and the S&P 500 ended the day up down 13 points at 1963.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently down 11 points at 6727.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is down two pips at $1.7129, EUR/USD is up eight pips at $1.3619 and USD/JPY is up seven pips at ¥101.64. Brent crude is down 28 cents at $108.63 and gold is trading at $1323, up $4.

Stocks: Admiral Group has posted a 9% drop in its first-half revenue. HSBC is selling off its Cayman Islands business; the unit has total assets of $1.4 billion. Weatherspoon’s reported a 4.9% increase in ten-week like-for-like sales. Centamin has maintained its full-year production guidance. AbbVie has increased its takeover offer for Shire pharmaceuticals to £51.15.

The day ahead: In the US, the Federal Reserve minutes will be released at 7pm.
