Friday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed up 109 points at 16,010, the NASDAQ finished up 47 points at 3969 and the S&P 500 ended the day up 14 points at 1795.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently down seven points at 6674.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is up one pip at $1.6197, EUR/USD is up 33 pips at $1.3514 and USD/JPY is up one pip at ¥101.14. Brent crude is up 110 cents at $110.01 and gold is trading at $1244, up $1.25.

Stocks: TUI Travel has seen one of its biggest shareholders sell out of their position to buy into TUI on the German exchange. Ofgem has told five of six electricity providers they must do better to offer value to their clients. Tullow Oil has posted encouraging news about its Kenyan operations.

The day ahead: Today sees the latest eurogroup meeting, and ECB President Mario Draghi will be speaking. With US markets continuing to steam ahead, Europe would have hoped to be dragged along on a tide of optimism from across the Atlantic.
