Markets continue gains, as Trump says US-China deal possible in about four weeks
Global markets have continued gains as, US president Donald Trump said on Thursday that a trade deal with China was close and could be announced in four weeks.
Trump also flagged that if issues were not resolved, it would be difficult to let China keep trading with the US.
Chinese Vice Premier at the White house
It comes as part of Trump’s meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He at the White house on Thursday. Trump told reporters that some of the more difficult points of the deal had been agreed but differences remained.
‘It's got a very, very good chance of happening. I think that will be great for both countries,’ Trump said
Trump also told reporters that he would hold a summit with Xi if a deal were to be reached.
‘I would say we'll know over the next four weeks,’ Trump said. Trump declined to answer when asked what would happen to US tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods as part of a deal.
Asian market gains
Asians share markets have gained on Friday as trade optimism continues over Sino-US talks, despite no concrete conclusions.
Japan's Nikkei added 0.1 % to be 2.6% firmer, while E-Mini futures for the S&P 500 edged up 0.04 %
The progress on US-China trade was enough to keep the safe-haven yen under pressure as the dollar reached its highest in three weeks at $111.79 , bouncing back down from Wednesday's low of $96.962.
