Discord IPO: what to know and how to buy shares
Messaging app Discord could list before the end of 2025. Read all about its upcoming initial public offering (IPO) below.

What Is Discord's business model?
Discord started in 2015 when founder Jason Citron wanted to solve communication problems he faced while gaming. Though not initially targeting gamers, Discord quickly gained popularity in gaming communities, especially among esports players, Twitch streamers, and Xbox Live users. Its success came from offering low-latency chat and an intuitive interface.
Today, Discord uses a freemium business model. The platform is free to use, but generates revenue through:
- Nitro premium memberships
- Server boosting features
- Sticker and emoji sales
- Corporate integrations
- Developer partnerships
- Gaming and creator collaborations
When will the Discord IPO happen?
No official IPO date has been announced, although analysts speculate Discord's IPO could happen before the end of 2025.
Discord is the communication platform embraced by gamers, communities and businesses worldwide that’s been on investors' radar for years. Since its founding in 2015, the company has raised billions through venture capital funding. CEO Jason Citron aims to expand services and improve user experience before going public.
The timing aligns with Discord's growth trajectory. As of February 2025, Discord has over 150 million monthly active users across diverse communities, from education to NFT trading.
What will the Discord IPO be valued at?
Financial analysts estimated Discord's IPO valuation at US$15 billion in October 2023, according to CNBC. The estimate was based on the company's September 2021 private funding round, led by Greenoaks Capital and Index Ventures.
Their financial outlook has shifted since then. In May 2023, Fidelity cut its Discord holdings to US$1.7 million - a 50% drop from its initial US$3.3 million investment.
The final IPO valuation will ultimately depend on several factors:
- Discord's financial performance until listing
- Market conditions at time of the IPO
- Investor demand
- Growth in revenue streams from corporate and educational sectors
If Discord achieves a US$20 billion valuation and offers 200 million shares, the price potentially could start at US$100 per share.
