What does 'Alpenglow' mean - and what is it replacing?

The name comes from the German word 'Alpenglühen' - the striking reddish-orange light that illuminates mountain peaks at sunrise and sunset. It was chosen deliberately: this upgrade represents both an ending and a beginning for Solana's technical identity. (QuickNode Blog, 2025.)

What it is ending: Proof of History (PoH), Solana's original innovation from the 2017 whitepaper, which used a continuous cryptographic hash chain to create verifiable timestamps for every transaction. And Tower BFT, the validator voting protocol built on top of PoH. Together these two systems have defined Solana since launch. Alpenglow retires both.

What it is beginning: a simpler, faster architecture built specifically for sub-200-millisecond finality. The governance document SIMD-0236 describes the upgrade as replacing the entire consensus layer - not patching it.
