A Trader’s Position
December 2024
A Trader’s Position presents data from the IG Group Client Sentiment Survey - a bi-annual study in our core geographies to understand our clients’ outlook on the financial markets, as well as their financial goals, ambitions, portfolio performance and future trading intentions.
Research overview
IG clients who placed a trade in the last 6 months from the UK, Australia, Germany and Japan were sent a ~10-minute online survey to track investor sentiment. This tracker originally launched in January 2022 with the data from this report coming from the December 2024 iteration. Of the 4,350 clients who participated in the survey, 800 were from Australia, 2,100 from the UK, 1,250 from Japan, 180 from Germany and 125 from Singapore.
In this report, three major themes are explored for their insights into the current outlook for IG clients. These pillars and their key findings include:
1. Trading behaviour and intentions:
- Geopolitical uncertainty and global economic conditions are shaping trader interest in US markets as well as diversification strategies
- The latest trends in Australian trader confidence include record-high optimism in the ASX 200 and declining inflationary concerns
2. Markets and sectors:
- The continued growth in cryptocurrency appeal has seen a surge in trading of this asset class amongst Australian traders
- AI-driven industries and semiconductor stocks have become key investment targets
- Focus on ETFs continues to grow and the influence of ESG factors in investment decisions declines
3. AI and traders:
- Traders are increasing integration of AI-driven trading tools into their strategies
- Younger traders are leading the adoption of AI-powered trading
- The role of AI in reshaping financial decision-making and market participation is growing
