A Trader’s Position

June 2025

A Trader’s Position takes data from the IG Group Client Sentiment Survey - a bi-annual study in our core geographies to understand our clients’ outlook on the financial markets, as well as their financial goals, ambitions, portfolio performance and future trading intentions.

Research overview

IG clients who placed a trade in the last six months from the UK, Australia, Singapore and Japan were sent a ~10-minute online survey to track investor sentiment. This tracker originally launched in January 2022, with the data from this report coming from the June 2025 dip. Of the 4,350 clients who participated in the survey, 825 were from Australia, 1,800 from the UK, 2,800 from Japan and 300 from Singapore.

In this report, three major themes are explored for their insights into the current outlook for IG clients. These pillars and their key findings include:

Theme 1 - Global uncertainty reshaping investment strategies

  • IG traders are exhibiting increasing concerns across all markets around geopolitical conflicts, wars and general uncertainty
  • The proportion of Australian IG traders who are unsure which index will experience the highest growth in the next six months has risen, indicating growing uncertainty in global market outlooks
  • Defence and Military is identified by IG traders as a key sector of growth in the next six months

Theme 2 - Markets and sectors

  • Australian IG traders are exhibiting a strong home bias, continuing to favour domestic shares, with local portfolio allocation rising
  • Australian IG traders’ concern about inflation has steadily declined
  • Australian IG traders are most responsive to bull markets, increasing trading volumes

Theme 3 - Evolving trading behaviours and product preferences

  • While international shares, cash savings and ETFs remain popular investments, there’s a slight decline in riskier assets like cryptocurrencies. Meanwhile, investment in commodities has steadied
  • The proportion of Australian IG traders who consider ESG factors important in their investment decision making is rising
  • ETFs continue to be a popular choice among Australian traders and future trading intentions remain strong
  • Utilising AI to help inform decision making among Australian IG traders has grown significantly, yet future AI tool adoption intentions have softened slightly
