Where the monex flows - STOXX 600 Europe
Leadership in the STOXX Europe 600 is shifting: oil and gas stocks and healthcare are outperforming, while banks are falling behind. Utilities and food producers are also ahead of the index. However, this rotation coincides with fewer stocks showing consistent upward trends.
The STOXX 600 ended October near 647. It gained 3.2% over four weeks but remained down 0.5% over three months. The headline index therefore masks substantial differences between sectors.
Only 15 of the 593 stocks analysed show a consistent upward trend with R² ≥ 0.80, down from 51 at the end of September. Meanwhile, the number of equivalent downward trends rose from 41 to 51. This measure captures trend consistency, rather than the total number of rising or falling stocks.
Oil and gas has a particularly strong lead over the broader market across three months. Healthcare has the larger advantage over four weeks. Banks, by contrast, are among the laggards across both periods.
| Sector | Relative over 3 months | Relative over 4 weeks |
|---|---|---|
| Oil & gas | +12.8 | +5.5 |
| Healthcare | +8.9 | +11.8 |
| Utilities | +3.2 | +3.6 |
| Food & beverages | +3.1 | +10.4 |
| Technology | +5.6 | −5.2 |
| Banks | −10.4 | −10.3 |
All figures are percentage points relative to the STOXX 600. The matrix measures relative price performance, not observed capital flows.
Shell PLCgained 21.6% over three months, Sartorius Stedim Biotech rose 31.3% and Verbund AGadvanced 21.2%. Their R² readings of 0.89, 0.87 and 0.90 indicate relatively consistent upward trends over the period analysed.
Their positions relative to the regression trend line differ: Sartorius Stedim is almost on its line (−0.1%), while Eurofins sits 6.2% above. A high R² describes past trend consistency, not future returns.
Energy prices, interest rates and a potential stabilisation in banks remain important for the rotation. Oil, healthcare and utilities are among the areas of relative strength. The decline in consistent upward trends continues to favour a selective assessment of European equities.
