At a glance

Citigroup faces an important technical test as analysts forecast earnings growth from a year earlier. Buyers have so far prevented a sustained break below the 200-day EMA. A move above $134 could strengthen the recovery. Beyond revenue and costs, investors will scrutinise progress towards resolving regulatory requirements.

Citigroup Q3 Earnings: Release Time and Expectations

Citigroup reports third-quarter results on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at approximately 14:00 CEST, followed by its earnings call at 17:00 CEST.

Metric LSEG/Refinitiv Consensus
Earnings per share $2.66
Revenue $23.72 billion
Total net interest income $16.63 billion

The forecasts imply 7.4% revenue growth. The projected 18.8% EPS increase uses the prior-year figure of $2.24, which excludes a notable item.

The StarMine SmartEstimate of $2.659 is effectively in line with consensus. However, ten downward EPS revisions versus five upgrades over the past 30 days indicate a more cautious recent trend.

Transformation, Costs and Profitability Take Priority

Reuters reports that Citi aims to submit a comprehensive internal audit to the Fed and OCC by year-end 2026 or in Q1 2027. There is no confirmed date for lifting the regulatory orders imposed in 2020.

Three operating themes deserve particular attention:

  • Net interest income: Existing full-year guidance calls for 5–6% growth excluding Markets.

  • Trading: Following a strong first half, the seasonal revenue decline in the second half could exceed the historical pattern of approximately 20%.

  • Costs and returns: Full-year targets remain an efficiency ratio of around 60% and a 10–11% return on tangible common equity (RoTCE). Additional investment and severance will weigh on the second half.

US credit-card quality and the pace of further share repurchases also remain relevant.

Seasonality and Options Highlight Potential for Movement

The Seasonax study shows an average gain of 2.49% between October 8 and November 10, with positive returns in 19 of 25 observations. However, the six negative periods recorded an average loss of 13.80%.

The options snapshot dated October 12 showed an implied move of ±4.04%. This reflects the expected magnitude at that time, without indicating the direction of the earnings reaction.

Analysts’ Average Price Target Stands at $152.27

The latest Refinitiv data covers 23 analysts, with an average price target of $152.27. Individual targets range from $131.69 to $170. The average implies approximately 17.5% upside from the October 9 closing price of $129.64.

Technical Analysis: A Break Above $134 Would Improve the Outlook

Following its broader advance, Citigroup reached a high near $148 in late June. The subsequent correction has developed within a descending channel.

The rising 200-day EMA, currently at $124.89, came under pressure in early October. Several candles briefly pierced the average, but a sustained breakdown did not follow. Long lower candle wicks suggest buying interest at lower prices. The supplied chart shows the stock trading at $130.37 at 15:46 CEST on October 12.

The next important hurdle is the channel’s upper boundary near $134. A confirmed breakout could support a recovery towards $140–141, with the June high near $148 becoming relevant beyond that resistance.

The RSI at 47.81 is improving slightly but remains below the 48.5 threshold used in this analysis. Reclaiming that level would strengthen the breakout case.

Below the 200-day EMA, $122 marks the upper boundary of a broader support zone extending down to approximately $118.
