Meta Q2 2026 earnings preview: can AI ads pay off?

The ad machine is beating estimates before it even reports - the real question is whether Meta's AI spending habit is about to test the market's patience.

When will Meta report its latest earnings?

Meta will report second-quarter (Q2) 2026 results on Thursday, 30 July at 06.00am AEST, after the United States (US) market close.

Q1 2026 recap: margins held, cracks started showing

  • Revenue: $56.31B, +33% y/y - beat the $55.5B Street estimate
  • Adjusted earnings per share (EPS): $7.31 vs. $6.79 est. (headline $10.44 included an $8.03B one-off tax benefit)
  • Ad impressions: +19%, price per ad +12%
  • Stock sold off next day anyway - the trigger was fiscal year (FY) 2026 capital expenditure (capex) guidance raised to $125–145B
  • Operating margin: ~41%, down from the 48% Q4'24 peak - first real sign AI spend is touching profitability

Management's line hasn't changed: artificial intelligence (AI) is the growth engine, capex is the entry fee, ad business can absorb it. Market's bought the story so far - Meta trades at a real premium to peers. This print is where that gets tested again.

Q2 preview: beat expected, capex is the swing factor

Strong ad business, AI story louder, margins quietly squeezing. Bullish setup, expensive stock, August wildcard waiting (social media addiction trial).

Meta Q2 2026 expectated earnings

Metric

Refinitiv Consensus

EPS $7.23
Revenue $60.16 billion
Company guidance $58 billion – $61 billion
FY2026 EPS/Revenue $32.99/$253.07 billion
Predicted surprise +0.18% EPS / +0.08% Revenue

'Buy', price target (PT) $835 (26% upside): healthy ad growth, margin tailwind from May layoffs. Sees third quarter (Q3) guide at $60.5 billion – $63.5 billion, up 18% –24% year-on-year (YoY). AI story: content retrieval, ad-model integration, Muse Spark, plus a possible Anthropic compute deal.

Beat expected, capex is the headline: models 2027 capex at ~$205 billion (+22%), tied to a 14GW buildout. Big Three hyperscaler capex hits $801 billion in 2027 - enough to push all three negative on free cash flow (FCF) through 2028.

Bottom line: the ad business might be fine. The tension is entirely how much Meta spends to stay in the AI race, and whether the market's patience for negative FCF holds.

Times interest earned (TIE) ratio down 26.74% YoY to 71.5x is the quiet one, still healthy, but Meta's leaning harder on debt to fund the buildout. Not a red flag yet, worth watching.

Real premium to industry on every lens – forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio ~1.7x the median, enterprise value-to-sales (EV/Sales) ~2.75x. Market's pricing Meta as an AI infrastructure growth stock, not an ad platform. That's why capex guidance matters more than the EPS beat.

  • P/E (19.19x): cheaper than Amazon (29.26x) and Apple (39.55x), pricier than Alphabet (17.18x)
  • Debt to equity (D/E) (24.11%): notably higher than Alphabet's 15.77%, worth watching given the capex path
  • EPS growth (1.46% YoY): softest of the group; Snap's 8,454% is a base-effect anomaly, not a real comp

Takeaway: Meta's premium is earned on scale and AI optionality, not on being cheap or fast-growing. The market won't forgive a growth miss.

Sentiment check

  • TipRanks Smart Score: 9/10 - outperform
  • Analyst consensus: strong buy - 35 'buy', 6 'hold', 0 'sell' (41 analysts)
  • Mean PT $843.72 - ~26% upside from here
  • IG clients: 88% long / 12% short, 501+ open positions
  • But de-risking into the print: 52% sells today, 52% sells this month - classic 'stay long, trim before earnings'.

Meta technical analysis

Meta retesting a major support/resistance zone at the mid Bollinger band, close to $650 heading into the print.

Meta Platforms Inc Source: IG Platform
  • Resistance: $650 - $700 - the July swing high
  • Mid-band pivot: $620 - the level in play right now
  • Support: $575–$550 - the April–June consolidation shelf

Hold above $650 into the print, path to $700 stays constructive. Lose $600 post-earnings, $575–550 is next test.

The wildcard

Social media addiction trial expected to start in August. Won't move the print, but it's headline risk independent of the fundamentals.

Bottom line

  • Ad business: expected to be healthy
  • Beat: largely priced in
  • Real swing factor: the Q3 guide and any fresh capex commentary
  • Valuation: priced as AI-growth stock, not ad platform
  • Setup: bullish consensus, crowded longs, key level $650
