Don't Sleep On It

The Irish are too good at saving. And this is a problem.

Yes, you read that right. The problem is money sitting in a savings account earns nowhere near as much over the long term compared to when it’s invested. It might as well be stuffed under the mattress. We think it’s time Ireland’s money woke up to its potential.

That’s why we’ve joined forces with Tommy Bowe to tackle the issue head on. To get people’s money out from under their mattresses, invested, and earning.

Seriously... don’t sleep on it.

What’s the campaign all about?

There is currently €175 billion sitting in savings and deposit accounts across Ireland. While having cash set aside for emergencies and short-term needs is important, our analysis shows just how much of a difference it can make over a lifetime when you put your money to work through investing rather than simply saving.

We found that someone investing €300 every month for 30 years could end up with €485k more than if they put the same amount into savings.*

That’s why we’ve launched Don’t Sleep On It with former Ireland rugby international Tommy Bowe. He already wakes up the nation with Ireland AM, and now he’ll be doing the same with people’s finances.

Over the coming months, we’ll be launching activations across Ireland to get people investing. And it’s not just Tommy who’s on board. He’s joined by renowned economist David W. Higgins, the brains to Tommy’s brawn.

With the Government planning to introduce a new Personal Investment Account, there’s never been a better time to learn more about investing. Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing practical guides, new research, videos and more to help Irish households feel confident taking that first step.

* Investments can fall as well as rise. Returns are not guaranteed.

“Lots of people know they should probably be doing more with their money, but investing can feel intimidating and it's easy to keep putting it off.

That's exactly what Don't Sleep On It is about.

You don't need to be wealthy to start investing and you don't have to be an expert either. If this campaign encourages more people to stop putting investing on snooze, learn more and take that first step, it'll have been worthwhile.”

How do you make the €175bn message impossible to ignore? Well...like this

To launch the campaign, Tommy helped us create one of Ireland’s biggest financial wake-up calls - an installation made from hundreds of mattresses, bringing to life the €175 billion Irish households currently hold in cash and deposit accounts.

Why mattresses? Because keeping money under the mattress isn’t just an old-fashioned idea. For long-term savers, leaving too much sitting in cash can mean missing out on years of potential investment growth.

So we took every mattress we could find in Dublin and brought them together to make the message impossible to miss. Now there’s nowhere left for Ireland’s savings to hide.

Watch Tommy take on Ireland’s €175bn savings problem.
