What is an ETF?

An exchange traded fund (ETF) is an asset that’s bought and sold on a stock exchange – like a share – but is made up of a selection of related assets instead of the ownership rights of a company.

It’s designed to track the performance of an existing market or group of markets. A FTSE 100 ETF, for example, would aim to track the performance of the FTSE 100. A precious metals ETF would track the performance of a group of precious metals

Reasons to trade ETFs

  • If you want exposure to a group of markets with a single position
  • If you want increased transparency over the asset you are trading
  • If you want to access unique markets, such as smart-beta or inverse ETFs

As well as CFD trading on ETF prices, you can invest in ETFs over the long term using a share dealing account.
