What are sprint markets?

Sprint markets are fast-expiring trades with only two outcomes. They allow you to quickly take advantage of any market situation where you see an opportunity.

Sprint markets answer the question 'will the price finish above or below its current level at expiry?' To place a sprint market trade:

Step 1
Choose your market, stake and timeframe (from 60 seconds to one hour).

Step 2
Decide whether you think the price will be higher or lower when the trade expires.

Step 3
Watch the trade play out on a live countdown chart, following the progress of your positions as the market moves.

Sprint market example

Select a market

You're interested in trading a Germany 30 sprint market because you think the price is volatile at the moment.

Sell or buy

You believe the Germany 30 will rise in the very short term, so you place a stake of £50 with a 5-minute expiry, in the ‘Above’ direction at our current price of 9676.40.

Alternatively, you could place a stake in the ‘Below’ direction if you believe the market will fall.

Fixed profit / loss

From the outset you know that your maximum potential loss is £50 (your stake), and your maximum potential profit is £40.50 (payout, minus stake).

With sprint markets, prices and payouts are calculated by us according to underlying market value, time to expiry, client sentiment and our expectation of future volatility.

Closing your trade

At expiry, after five minutes have passed, the Germany 30 has risen sharply and is indeed trading above 9676.40.

With a sprint market, you cannot close your position before expiry.

Calculating profit / loss

Your payout is £90.50, giving you a gross profit of £90.50 - £50 (stake) = £40.50.

What if...

If the Germany 30 had fallen below 9676.40 after five minutes, you would lose your stake of £50, giving you a gross loss of £50.

Sprint market FAQs

Can I close a sprint market trade before it expires?

No. You can't close a sprint market trade early – when it expires it will be automatically settled.

What markets can I trade as sprint markets?

You can trade a wide variety of sprint markets with IG:

  • 11 major indices including FTSE 100, Wall Street and Germany 30
  • FX pairs – EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/JPY
  • US Light Crude
  • Bitcoin

Why is there a unique interface for sprint markets?

Our sprint markets interface is optimised for quick access. Because sprint markets have such short timeframes, the interface has countdown charts to allow you to follow the progress of your positions as the market moves.

You can see price moves as a line chart, your entry price, and a countdown to expiry. When the price is in your favour the chart will be highlighted blue. When it's against you and you're potentially making a loss, the chart is highlighted red.

You can also monitor your positions and open multiple trades at the same time, all on one screen.
