Desert X Prix Weekend Recap
Desert X Prix Weekend Recap
A thrilling start to season two for our partners and reigning Extreme E champions, Rosberg X Racing as they kicked off the season with a win in NEOM, Saudi Arabia for the Desert X Prix!
It was Johan Kristoffersson’s and Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky’s first outing together. Johan, who completed the inaugural season with Team RXR is now joined in season two by fellow Swedish driver, Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky. Mikaela joins the team from Jenson Button’s Extreme E team, JBXE. Between 2017 and 2021 Mikaela took part in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship. The 29-year-old driver has raced in various series since the age of twelve!
The all-Swedish driver line-up proved stellar this past weekend and we cannot wait to see what the season brings to Team RXR.
From the temperature to the terrain, Neom’s desert landscape and environment provided a picturesque, yet challenging drive for the teams. The sands’ depths, and a combination of overnight rain and heat in the day created a tough track for all.
With experience from last year’s race both drivers well and truly understood the course, and the challenges to come. The gripping Final saw a red flag mid race which led Johan to restart in third position. Known as the ‘King of Cool’, Johan took the pressure in his stride. Racing ahead for the win!
RXR’s commitment to leave a lasting positive impact at every race location is showcased in the first instalment of the team’s 2022 #DrivenByPurpose campaign. Resulting from its collaboration with Turquoise Mountain in 2021, RXR showcases a ceramic charm made by women from the AlUla Craft School using natural mud from the Tabuk region and stamped with the RXR hashtag (#RXR). RXR has been supporting Turquoise Mountain in its effort to restore endangered historic communities and revive traditional crafts by providing viable commercial platforms for trade.
Extreme E, in partnership with Ba’a Foundation, is making strong progress in the protection of endangered sea turtles along the Red Sea coastline. The sport for purpose championship has teamed up with the Saudi Arabian non-profit organisation to help preserve the endangered Green Turtle and critically endangered Hawksbill turtle in Ras Baridi, close to where the series raced in its inaugural season in 2021.Ba’a Foundation aspires to preserve the local environment, promote a culture of conscious environmental practices, and contribute to achieving sustainable environmental development.
IG Prime’s CEO, Fouad Bajjali commented: ‘We are very happy to continue our journey with Team Rosberg X Racing into season two of Extreme E. The wider mission of Team RXR is about being something bigger than sport. It is about sharing a message and working collaboratively to raise awareness of important global environmental issues. Team RXR exemplify what it takes to be leaders and we wish the team the best of luck this season.’
Team Rosberg X Racing driver, Johan Kristoffersson commented: ‘Very rarely do I get a rush from driving a racing car, but this was the biggest adrenaline rush that I’ve had for many years. I am just super happy that it all went well and very proud of the result.’
The team will continue their Extreme E journey in May at the Island X Prix as they return to the beautiful Italian island of Sardinia.
