You can place a trade directly from the asset's product details page.
How do I place a trade?
Search for the asset you want to buy, or find it in your watchlist.
Tap the asset to open the product details page.
Tap the Buy button at the bottom of the screen.
Enter the value, or tap the shares toggle to enter a quantity.
Select the account you want to buy into — GIA, ISA, or JISA.
Review the estimated costs, then tap Review.
Check the order summary and tap Confirm to place the order.
Once your order is placed, you will see one of the following:
Order complete — your order was filled in full.
Order partially filled — part of your order was filled. The remaining shares are pending until the market can match them.
Order submitted — your order will be placed when the set price is met (limit orders).
Order timed out — your order was not completed in time. Tap Try again or review the details before resubmitting.
Are there any additional charges when buying UK or US stocks?
When you buy UK-listed shares, the following may apply on the review screen:
Stamp Duty: Stamp Duty Reserve Tax is charged at 0.5% of the amount you pay for the shares.
PTM Levy: charged at a flat rate of £1 on consideration over £10,000.
When buying shares in a currency different to your account base currency (for example, US stocks in USD), an FX conversion fee of 0.7% applies on top of the exchange rate. This is shown on the review screen as FX fee.
What happens if I don’t have enough funds?
If your account does not have enough funds, you will see an insufficient funds message in the deal ticket. From there you can:
Tap Add money to fund your account.
Tap Move money to move funds from another account without leaving the deal ticket.
What order types are available?
The IG app supports the following order types for invest accounts:
Market order: executed immediately at the best available price.
Limit order: placed if the set share price is met. Expiry options: Good till Cancelled, End of day, or Good till Date.
Stop order: automatically set to the nearest price below the current price. The order level cannot be set below the current price.
Expiry options:
Good till Cancelled (GTC) — stays open until you cancel it.
End of day — expires at market close if not filled.
Good till Date — select an expiry date and time from a calendar picker.
What is W-8BEN and why do I need to complete it?
Before you can invest in US stocks or ETFs, you need to submit a W-8BEN form. This is a regulatory requirement that allows non-US persons to invest in US-listed securities.
You will be prompted to complete the form the first time you try to buy a US stock or ETF. The form asks for:
First name and last name
Date of birth
Residential address
Country of residence
Tax residency
National Insurance number
Once submitted, a confirmation screen tells you that you can now invest in US stocks and ETFs.
Note: If you have already completed the W-8BEN form on another IG platform, you do not need to complete it again.
How do I sell shares?
To sell shares you already hold:
Go to the product details page for the asset.
Tap your open position.
In the drawer that appears, tap the Close tab.
Enter the number of shares to sell, or tap Sell max to sell your full holding.
Tap Close to confirm.
Note: Users who hold share dealing positions will also see a Sell button, allowing them to sell their shares directly. To edit stop or limit levels on an open position, tap the position and select the Edit tab. This feature is not available at launch.
How do I trade from multiple accounts?
When placing a trade, you can select which account to trade from directly within the deal ticket. When buying a stock, you will see an account selector to pick from your GIA, ISA, or JISA.
Can I edit a pending or working order?
You cannot edit a pending or working order directly at launch, but this is a feature we will offer very soon. To change the terms of an order, cancel it and re-establish it with the new details. In the meantime, please use our web trading platform or IG Trading to edit your working order.
Can I close a position from the homepage?
Closing and editing positions directly from the homepage is not available at this time and will be made available in a future update. Tap on a position from the homepage to go to the product details page, where you can close it.
What is the combined deal and order ticket?
The IG app combines deal and order into a single screen — previously these were two separate tabs. The default is a deal. To set a conditional order, turn on the Trade When Prices option. You can change your default order type or opening behaviour in Deal Settings.
For invest accounts (GIA, ISA, JISA), only the buy button is shown — you cannot short an invest account. CFD and spread betting accounts are coming soon to the new IG app. Short selling through a trading account will be available then.
