Wednesday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed down 159 points at 14,776, the NASDAQ finished down 75 points at 3694 and the S&P 500 ended the day 20 points weaker at 1655.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently down 25 points at 6440.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is down 49 pips at $1.6034, EUR/USD is 49 pips lower at $1.3525 and USD/JPY is up 49 pips at ¥97.37. Brent crude is down 82 cents at $109.33 and gold is trading at $1317, down $2.

Stocks: Brewing and pub group Marston’s reported a 2% increase in second-half like-for-like sales. Natural resources company Vedanta Resources announced a 16% increase in second-half mined metals.

The day ahead: UK GDP and mortgage approvals are due for release at 9.30am. In the US, consumer confidence and new home sales will be announced at 3pm.
