2017 look ahead: investment opportunities

Russ Mould of AJ Bell discusses some of the investment opportunities which may present themselves in 2017.

All trading involves risk. Losses can exceed deposits.

Money-making stocks saw some clear winners and losers in 2016, with most success stories dependant on which country and currency the company or commodity functioned in. AJ Bell’s Russ Mould gives us his top tips for 2017.

He says Next is a stock to watch as it has all the elements needed to produce a solid performance. Russ believes there’s also money to be made in bonds, equities and the emerging markets. That said, Russ feels British stocks will feel the pressure of sterling, which may drag on profits. He insists it is wise to keep a diversified portfolio with plenty of international products in order to minimise any potential headwinds which may hit the market in what is set to be a potentially tumultuous year for Britain, thanks to the impending trigger of Article 50.

US dollar, Brexit, bonds and banks are the four big themes for the next year, with the FTSE set to hit 7300, thanks to dollar exposure.

In terms of challenges next year, Russ points to the mining sector, but suggests inflation could be supportive.
