How to Place Trades on MetaTrader 4

MetaTrader 4 provides four distinct methods to open an order window for placing trades. The platform offers multiple access points to accommodate different trading workflows and preferences.

How do I open the order window?


Choose any of these methods:

Method 1: Market Watch window

Double-click any instrument (e.g., EUR/USD)


Method 2: Toolbar

Click the New Order button


Method 3: Chart menu

Right-click on a chart and select New Order


Method 4: Keyboard

Press F9

How do I set up my trade?


Select your instrument

Step 1 - Check the Symbol box shows your desired instrument

Step 2 - Change it if needed using the dropdown


Set your trade size

Step 1 - Click the Volume box

Step 2 - Either:

  • Select from the dropdown options

  • Type your desired value directly

Minimum trade sizes:

  • CFD accounts: 0.01

  • Spread bet accounts: 0.1

Add comments (optional)

Use the Comments box to add notes that help identify your trades.

What order types can I use?


Instant execution (default)

Executes your order at the current market price.

Pending orders

Sets a future price to open your trade. Choose between:

  • Stop orders

  • Limit orders

How do I execute my trade?


Click either:

  • Buy button (for long positions)

  • Sell button (for short positions)

Your order executes immediately.

How do I monitor my trades?


Step 1 - Open the Terminal window

Step 2 - Click the Trade tab

Here you'll see:

  • All active trades

  • Unique deal ID for each order

  • Order types indicated by color:

    • Red = Sell orders

    • Blue = Buy orders

How do I close a trade?


Option 1: Double-click method

Step 1 - Double-click the order ticket number

Step 2 - Click the Close button


Option 2: Right-click method

Step 1 - Right-click the order in Terminal window

Step 2 - Select Close Order

Key points

  • Each order receives a unique deal ID

  • Orders execute at current market prices (instant execution)

  • You can add multiple pending orders

  • All trades appear instantly in your Terminal window
