Thursday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed down 12.7 at 16,501.66, the NASDAQ finished 34.5 points lower at 4126.97 and the S&P 500 ended the day down 4.16 at 1875.39.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently up 25 points at 6699.33.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is up 16.6 pips at $1.6797, EUR/USD is 7.4 pips higher at $1.3825 and USD/JPY is down 20.8 pips at ¥102.32. Brent crude is up 18 cents at $101.63 and gold is trading at $1285, down $2.15.

Stocks: Markets have opened higher following Facebook and Apple results last night, when the tech giants were able to provide positive earnings for their most recent quarters. AstraZeneca has started 1.4% higher, reaching £41 again after its own figures showed a rise in profits. The bid talk from earlier in the week continues to act as a support, but £41 remains the level to beat.

The day ahead: German IFO is released at 9am, while European Central Bank president Mario Draghi speaks in Amsterdam at 10am. US durable goods and jobless claims are published at 1.30pm, while today we have earnings from Coca Cola, Caterpillar, Amazon, Microsoft and General Motors.
