Friday night in the US: The Dow Jones closed up 41 points at 16,775, the NASDAQ finished up 13 points at 4310 and the S&P 500 ended the day up six points at 1936.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently down five points at 6773.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is up nine pips at $1.6975, EUR/USD is down 24 pips at $1.3513 and USD/JPY is down ten pips at ¥101.95. Brent crude is up 75 cents at $113.10 and gold is trading at $1282, up $6.50.

Stocks: The legal wrangles that BP has faced continue in the US with more problems arising from the Gulf of Mexico disaster. Vodafone has offered terms to acquire the balance of shares in Italian technology company Cobra Auto Technologies. Centrica CEO Sam Laidlaw has ruled himself out of the running for the vacant CEO spot at BG Group. Majestic Wine has posted full-year figures reflecting a 1.4% improvement in profits but a like-for-like fall in revenue.

The day ahead: The markets will be preparing for the eurozone inflation figures due out this morning. Later in the day US Industrial production figures and Empire manufacturing figures will be released.
