Thursday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed up 18 points at 15,4701, the NASDAQ finished up 11 points at 3610 and the S&P 500 closed up four points at 1680.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently down one point at 6570.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is down 47 pips at $1.5166, EUR/USD is down 23 pips at $1.3101 and USD/JPY is up 75 pips at Y100.32. Olie - Brent Crude is down 13 cents at $108.52 and gold is trading at $1277, up $1.

Stocks: Anglo American announced a mixed second-quarter production report. 3i Group announced a 5% increase in net asset value on the quarter. London Stock Exchange announced a 39% increase in first-quarter revenue

The day ahead: In Europe, UK retail sales are due out at 9.30am. In the US, jobless claims are due out at 1.30pm. Ben Bernanke of the Federal Reserve is testifying at 3pm, and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index is also released at 3pm. (all London times).
