Friday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed down 65 points at 16,417, the NASDAQ finished up three points at 4218 and the S&P 500 ended the day down two points at 1845.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently up seven points at 6823.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is down 32 pips at $1.6322, EUR/USD is down 22 pips at $1.3598 and USD/JPY is down one pip at ¥104.34. Brent crude is up 21 cents at $105.87 and gold is trading at $1240, down $2.

Stocks: William Hill posted a 6% increase in fourth-quarter revenue. 

The day ahead: UK retail sales is due at 9.30am. Ben Broadbent of the MPC is due to make an announcement at 12.15pm.

 In the US, building permits and housing starts are due out at 1.30pm. Industrial production is due out at 2.15pm, followed by University of Michigan consumer confidence at 2.55pm.
