Friday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed up 98 points at 16,836, the NASDAQ finished up 33 point at 3776 and the S&P 500 ended the day up 12 points at 1940.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently up 11 points at 6825.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is down 13 pips at $1.6806, EUR/USD is down 13 pips at $1.3647 and USD/JPY is down 12 pips at ¥102.30. Brent crude is down 14 cents at $108.92 and gold is trading at $1255, up $1.

Stocks: Ultra Electronics has won a three year contract with the US Navy worth $19m. Bank of America is in talks with the US justice department to settle a case in relation to mis-selling mortgage backed securities; the fine could be $12 bn.

The day ahead: UK trade balance and consumer inflation figures are due out at 9.30am. In the US, non-farm payrolls and unemployment will be released at 1.30pm.
