Friday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed down 21 points at 16,558, the NASDAQ finished up 12 points at 3594 and the S&P 500 ended the day down one point at 1883.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently down eight points at 6801.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is down three pips at $1.6892, EUR/USD is down 16 pips at $1.3853 and USD/JPY is up 16 pips at ¥102.49. Brent crude is up 25 cents at $108.08 and gold is trading at $1283, down $1.

Stocks: Royal Bank of Scotland posted a 99% increase in its first-quarter pre-tax profits. Pfizer increased its offer for AstraZeneca to £50 per share; the previous offer was £46.61 per share.

The day ahead: The eurozone manufacturing purchasing managers index is out at 9am, followed by UK construction PMI at 9.30am, and eurozone unemployment data.

In the US, non-farm payrolls and unemployment data will be released at 1.30pm, followed by factory orders at 3pm.
