Friday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed down 135 points at 16,441, the NASDAQ finished down 33 points at 4143 and the S&P 500 ended the day up down 16 points at 1831.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently down three points at 6714.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is up eight pips at $1.6462, EUR/USD is down 19 pips at $1.3651 and USD/JPY is down 49 pips at ¥104.27. Brent crude is up 50 cents at $108.26 and gold is trading at $1233, up $9.

Stocks: Next has increased its full-year profit forecast.

The day ahead: UK construction PMI and mortgage approvals are due at 9.30am, followed by Italian CPI at 10am. In the US, Ben Bernanke of the Federal Reserve is speaking at 7.30pm.
