Tuesday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed up seven points at 15,801, the NASDAQ finished up 22 points at 4148 and the S&P 500 ended the day up two points at 1799.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently up 30 points at 6621.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is up two pips at $1.6407, EUR/USD is up 29 pips at $1.3674 and USD/JPY is down three pips at ¥102.23. Brent crude is up 50 cents at $108.48 and gold is trading at $1283, up $8.

Stocks: Barclays reported a 32% drop in full-year profits to £5.2 billion. Thomas Cook posted a 0.9% drop in quarterly revenue.

The day ahead:  In the US, Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen is due to make an announcement at 3pm, and this will be followed by release of the wholesale inventories report.
