This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently down 22 points at 6485.
FX and commodities: GBP/USD is up 36 pips at $1.6409, EUR/USD is up 11 pips at $1.3797 and USD/JPY is up 37 pips at ¥102.80. Brent crude is up ten cents at $109.87 and gold is trading at $1255, up $3.25.
Stocks: Once again Royal Bank of Scotland has to pay out fines imposed by the regulators, this time to the tune of $100 million as a result of money transfers to countries such as Iran. Sports Direct has posted good results for its first half, with pre-tax profits up 17% to £146.2 million. Energy services company John Wood Group has surprised the markets with news that its engineering arm expects profits to drop by between 10-15% over the next year.
The day ahead: ECB president Mario Draghi will be speaking as the central bank gives its monthly update. In the US, this afternoon we will get an update on the monthly retail sales figures along with the latest unemployment claims.
