Friday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed down 25 points at 15,300, the NASDAQ finished down nine points at 3715 and the S&P 500 ended the day down five points at 1683.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently down 12 points at 6577.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is down four pips at $1.5802, EUR/USD is down 16 pips at $1.3282 and USD/JPY is up 21 pips at ¥99.75. Brent crude is down 42 cents at $111.19 and gold is trading at $1319, down $2.

Stocks: Vodafone has confirmed it is to take over Kabel Deutschland for €7.7 billion. JD Wetherspoon reported a 6.3% increase in full-year pre-tax profits.

The day ahead: Eurozone employment and trade balance are due at 10am. In the US, retail sales and PPI are out at 1.30pm, and University of Michigan consumer confidence is due at 2.55pm, followed by business inventories at 3pm.
