Wednesday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning's equity news and key market movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow Jones closed up 127 points at 15,191, the NASDAQ finished 22 points higher at 3729 and the S&P 500 ended the day 12 points ahead at 1683.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently down nine points at 6574.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is down two pips at $1.5731, EUR/USD is 12 pips lower at $1.3257 and USD/JPY is up one pip at ¥100.39. Brent crude is down 22 cents at $107.19 and gold  is trading at $1367, up $3.

Stocks: Sports Direct has announced an 18% increase in 13-week sales up to 28 July. Barratt Developments revealed a 73% increase in full-year pre-tax profit.

The day ahead: The UK claimant count and unemployment rate are due at 9.30am, followed by the Confernce Board leading index at 10am. In the US, wholesale inventories are released at 3pm.
