Friday morning snapshot

A snapshot of the early morning’s equity news and key markets movements.

Last night in the US: The Dow closed up 13 points at 15,555, the NASDAQ finished up 25 points at 3605 and the S&P 500 closed up four points at 1690.

This morning in London: The FTSE 100 is currently up four points at 6591.

FX and commodities: GBP/USD is down 11 pips at $1.5378, EUR/USD is up two pips at $1.3279 and USD/JPY is down 53 pips at Y98.78. Brent is down 76 cents at $104.75 and gold is trading at $1335, up $1.

Stocks: Anglo American announced a 34% drop in first half pre-tax profits. Pearson revealed a 27% decline in first-half adjusted operating profits.

The day ahead: In Europe, we are not expecting any major announcements.

In the US, University of Michigan consumer sentiment is due out at 2.55pm (London time).
